At Sioux Falls Water Purification Plant in South Dakota USA, the staff always relied on gravity to feed slake lime slurry to their softening basins.
The lime slurry being a dense product and with a high solid content of up to 35% was very abrasive. A progressive cavity pump would require frequent maintenance with this type of slurry. It would have caused a lot of wear.
